Restoration literature, English literature written after the Restoration of the monarchy in following the period of the Commonwealth. Some literary historians speak of the period as bounded by the reign of Charles II (–85), while others prefer to include within its scope the writings produced during the reign of James II (–88), and even literature of the s is often spoken.
Restoration comedies are plays by such lateth- and earlyth-century British playwrights as William Congreve, Aphra Behn, William Wycherley, George Farquhar, John Vanbrugh, and, later, Richard.
Restoration followed a nearly two-decade ban on stage performances by Puritans, which may explain why the plays of the period were so bawdy. The Restoration gave rise to the first female playwright of the English stage, Aphra Behn. It also marked the first instances of actresses appearing on stage in female (and sometimes male) roles.
Charles II was an active and interested patron of the drama. Soon after his restoration, inhe granted exclusive play-staging rights, so-called Royal patents, to the King's Company and the Duke's Company, led by two middle-aged Caroline playwrights, Thomas Killigrew and William patentees scrambled for performance rights to the previous generation's Jacobean and Caroline.
The first temptation is to define the comedy of the fifty years following the restoration of Charles II in the terms used by the playwrights themselves. But it does not require much reading of seventeenth-century comic theory to realize that playwrights and critics shared few.

Marriage and its discontents lie at the heart of Restoration comedy. In all four of the great plays gathered here, a married woman confronts her would-be seducer. Each dramatist, however, totally reinterprets the situation. Thomas Otway's The Soldier's Fortune converts adultery into political revenge.
Some Restoration Playwrights William Congreve, often recognized for his excellence and skill in writing comedy, was born in in Bardsey, West Yorkshire. Congreve stepped into the theater spotlight with his breakout success The Old Bachelor in Sometime at the end of the seventeenth century, George Villiers, the second Duke of Buckingham, wrote a play which he called The Restauration: Or, Right will take Place.
